A thing that bothers me:
When people start replacing “male” and “female” with “male-identified” and “female-identified”. Or even “correcting” others about it… In every instance. It’s one thing to clarify in situations such as “This women’s group is open to all female-identified people” because god knows women’s-only spaces have a reputation for excluding trans women, (Which, mind you, doesn’t even begin to make sense. Trans women are women, logic follows that they should be allowed in women’s only spaces. Duhhhhh.) it’s another to start qualifying every instance of “male” or “female” with “identified”.
This is definitely a thing that cis people do in a misplaced attempt to be more inclusive. I’ve never seen a trans person ask for this kind of language to be used like that.
Cis people only do this because they’ve still got this idea that the words “male” and “female” are tied directly to anatomy. ALL male-identified people are just as male as they decide themselves to be. Period. Same goes for female-identified people, or non-binaries, or people with multiple genders or what have you. I don’t need the qualifier of “identified”. I’m just male. If it’s necessary to clarify then go ahead and make the distinction, but if we’re just chatting then it’s really unnecessary and kind of demeaning.
Thanks.
